The Clan

We meet all the members of the Carson family. Godfrey reluctantly allows Jennifer to join Carson and Carson as a solicitor. To the consternation of the family, Godfrey announces his engagement to Felicity Bryce, the widowed daughter of the influential Sir Humphrey Moore.

Jennifer becomes involved in a notorious child murder case. She pursuades Bill to undertake the defence of the accused, George Royston. There is an angry confrontation between Bill and Godfrey, when Godfrey hears this news.

The Witness

Godfrey tries to manipulate Bill out of the Roystron trial - without success. Amy goes out with a young philanderer, Alan Manning, and discovers that Tommy is drinking heavily. The Royston trial begins and Arthur finds a witness in Ballarat who can supply an alibi for Royston. Bill flies to Ballarat to bring the witness back to Melbourne. On the way home the aeroplane crashes and the witness and Bill are killed.

Requiem

Episode 3

Jennifer, shattered, tries to hold the family together. Godfrey takes over the funeral and thankfully passes the Royston defence back to the Crown Solicitor's office. Robert discovers that a large sum of money in Bill's safekeeping has vanished. After the funeral, Jennifer approaches Godfrey about the Royston defence. Angry at her interference, he tells her that Bill has apparently embezzled a large sum of money from a client. Furthermore, other sums have mysteriously disappeared without explanation from Bill's accounts. Jennifer's financial position is precarious.

The Royston Trial

Taking advantage of Jennifer's departure, Margery successfully pushes for the purchase of Bill's house for Robert and herself.

The Medicine Man

Sarah decides she'd like to move in to the Godfrey Carson house on a permanent basis and Jennifer agrees to let her stay with her grandfather until the accommodation problems at Vic's have been resolved.

Arthur conducts Mrs Ward's custody case and wins a resounding victory when he breaks down the husband's evidence and proves him to be a violent drunkard. As a result of Arthur's involvement with the Ward case, he decides to stand up to his father and stay with Jennifer. Much to Arthur's surprise his father applauds the decision and says he will lend Jennifer and Arthur the money to set up properly in an office. Tommy's political career takes a step in the right direction when Tommy convinces Edgar Swann that he's the right man to take over Swann's parliamentary seat, and in a meeting at the local committee rooms, Tommy shows up well against his chief opponent in the pre-selection stakes. Sarah, while enjoying the luxury life at Godfreys, begins to miss the warm family atmosphere of life with Jennifer.

Madeline, an old school friend of Amy's, comes to the Carson house for a holiday, and Amy is faced with a dilemma - will she help Madeline obtain an illegal abortion? Jennifer becomes involved in trying to counsel the girl, and Amy meets an idealistic young doctor who helps save Madeline's life after she has obtained the services of a 'backyard' abortionist. At a speaking engagement, Tommy meets Mrs Amelia Redman, with whom an instant attraction develops. Jennifer and Arthur set up their new office, and all seems set fair for the new firm of Carson and Simpson.

Madeline returns home after convalescing at the Carson house. Amy discovers that she prefers the hardworking, idealistic Dr. Conway over the young man-about-town Alan Manning. Felicity brings Sarah to visit Jennifer at her new office, and tells Jennifer she believes Sarah's on the point of deciding to return home. Thanks to Mrs Redman, Tommy is able to steal a march over his political rival, Major Dolman, and wins pre-selection for Edgar Swann's former seat. Robert and Margery reveal what seem like irreconcilable differences. Robert leaves home and checks into a private hotel.

She, and an ex-nurse, Cecily Johnson, are arrested on a charge of distributing obscene literature. Gerard reveals to Godfrey that Ruth is seeing another, much younger man. It transpires that the gentleman is her son.

Jennifer meets Charlie Miller who says he has information which will clear her dead husband's name. In exchange for this information, Miller wants 250 pounds, which Jennifer borrows from Robert. Her investigations connect Miller with an illegal gambling operation run by Donnegan, a known gangster. Godfrey instructs Gerard to find out what he can about the story. He goes to Donnegan's club, but is unable to track down Miller. With the 250 pounds in hand, Jennifer goes to the agreed rendezvous to meet Miller, but finds Miller's murdered body.

The police make enquiries of Jennifer and Arthur regarding Miller's murder. They also speak to Gerard. As Godfrey well knows and fears, the police have good reason to suspect Gerard but Gerard seems to be in the clear. Amy finds out that her father has instructed Gerard to keep Dr. Conway at bay. Jennifer becomes aware that the roof of Robert and Margery's marriage problems lies in their childishness. She suggests that Dr Conway may be able to help. Tommy meets up with an old associate. His name in Donnegan.

As Tommy's election campaign enters the final phase, Jay Donnegan tries to blackmail Tommy into promising future support for illegal business deals. When this threatens to become public knowledge, Tommy's confidence falters. He gets drunk and talks of pulling out of the campaign. Jennifer presses Donnegan for the information which she believes is going to clear Bill's name. She also meets James Dolman, one of Tommy's competitors, and is impressed by his honesty and policies.

Jennifer continues to press Donnegan for the information regarding Bill and questions Tommy about his association with Donnegan. Realising the threat to Tommy's election prospects, Gerard schemes to undermine Donnegan's power over Tommy. He wins the confidence of another gangland boss and arranges to have Donnegan's gang wiped out. Jennifer befriends Major James Dolman, Tommy's rival for the seat of Cameron and despite Godfrey's bitter objections, the two become close friends.

Gerard's plan to play Donnegan against a rival gang leads to a gangland shoot out. Though he escapes with his life, Donnegan's power is effectively destroyed. Despite Godfrey's disapproval, Amy and Doctor Conway continue to meet. Jennifer reluctantly decides to discontinue her friendship with Major Dolman until after the election.

She, in an effort to be near him, takes a cleaning job at the hospital and later discovers a desperately ill Tommy about to receive treatment. Working on Billy through his cricketing interests, Godfrey successfully offers his grandson employment at Carson and Carson.
